Warriors debut fresh-faced side in Helsinki
By Timothy Gilbert
Warriors Rugby Club suffer 12-28 loss to Saimaa Sharks in sweltering season opener.
The Warriors men's second team played their first game of the season against opponents Saimaa Sharks in Myllypuro on what was the hottest day of the year so far.
For many in the Warriors ranks, this was their first outing on a rugby pitch and nerves were high leading up to the kickoff.
Warriors conceded two early tries, putting the guests 0-14 ahead early on. The home side bravely fought back with brilliant tries from centre Antti Ulvila and scrum-half Jaakko Vilén (capt.), topped off with a conversion from Matias Hyytiäinen to make it a 2-point game at 12-14.
The match remained hotly contested for the next 50 minutes with either side unable to cross the whitewash. The energy-sapping heat took its toll throughout the game, leaving bodies scattered across the park and causing tired players to slide up a little high in their tackles. A couple of players from Saimaa saw yellow, but unfortunately, Warriors were unable to capitalise with the extra men after some valiant defending from the Sharks.
Eventually, with players returning from the sin bin, Saimaa broke the 50-minute impasse and scored a couple of quick tries to take the final score to 12-28.
Well done to all those involved! Warriors' team spirit was unwavering throughout the whole match, and a great game of rugby was enjoyed by all.
The second team's next game is on Saturday, August 10th at Myllypuro, Helsinki against visitors Pori. Time TBD.
