Hey all Warriors and Warriors fans!

This weekend the men's national team is in Greece, good luck boys!

Remember the 6 Nations is ongoing (although there's plenty of Olympics on TV too..), our sponsor bar Aussiebar is broadcasting most of the matches plus the Finnish ice hockey of course.

Next week there is the traditional Jyväskylä snow rugby.

Week after there is the anticipated premiere of the Free Time Machos movie. And WRC is naturally supporting the cause and organising to watch it, see Facebook event.

Winter training continues with the same training times as annouced on the web site.

Beginners training will be organised soon.. stay tuned!

The awards for the 2009 season were presented at the End of Season party on 14.11. Everyone had loads of fun and a few refreshments were enjoyed by all.

Aloittelijoiden kurssin suosio yllätti jopa järjestäjät, ja jatkoa seuraakin heti!
Lokakuun ajan sunnuntaisin vapaa pelivuoro Talissa ulkona klo 16.

Marraskuun ensimmäiseltä viikolta alkaen (2.11.2009) talven harjoitusvuorot ovat seuraavat:

Maanantai Finnair Stadium 20-21, tekonurmi (+juniorit)
Keskiviikko Talin Palloiluhalli 21:30-22:30, tekonurmi
Sunnuntai Talin Palloiluhalli 18:30-19:30, tekonurmi, iso kenttä (yhdessä HRC:n kanssa)

Beginners course was very successful, thanks to the organisers and participants!
Games will continue on Sundays in Tali at 4 PM (outdoors) until end of October.

Starting on the first week of November, the winter training times will be:

Monday Finnair Stadium 8-9 pm, articial grass (+juniors)
Wednesday Tali Football hall 9:30-10:30 pm, artificial grass
Sunday Tali Football hall 6:30-7:30 pm, artificial grass, large pitch (jointly with HRUFC)

Rugby palaa vuoden 2016 olympialaisiin Rio De Janeirossa. Pelimuotona on 7's, jossa Suomen naisten maajoukkue on Euroopan rankingissa tällä hetkellä sijalla 10.

Suomen mestaruus! / Championship repeat!

Warriors Rugby Club uusi miesten Suomen mestaruuden voittamalla Tampere RUC:in kauden tiukimmassa ottelussa 20-17. Finaali oli tiukka taisto ja ansaittu kauden huipentuma, molemmat joukkueet olivat ottelun edetessä johdossa.
Yksikään joukkue ei ole vielä voittanut mestaruutta kolmea kertaa peräkkäin, joten WRC:llä on mahdollisuus tehdä Suomen rugbyn historiaa 2010.

Warriorsin naiset pääsivät myös juhlimaan ensimmäistä kertaa Suomen mestaruutta Fuusio-joukkueella yhdessä Helsinki Rugby Clubin naisten kanssa.

Onnea mestareille!

Warriors Rugby Club regained the men's Finnish Championship by defeating Tampere RUC 20-17 in a true thriller. Both teams had the lead during the match, and Warriors had to really deserve the win in the season highlight.
No one has taken the Finnish title three times in a row, so WRC will have a chance to write Finnish rugby history in 2010.

Warriors Ladies also got to celebrate Finnish Championship together with Helsinki RUFC women by gaining the trophy with Fuusio team.

Congratulations Champions!

Runkosarja päättynyt / regular season ended

Warriors voitti runkosarjan eteläisen alkulohkon puhtaalla pelillä, ja saa siten kotiedun semifinaaliin.

Kauden tiukimmaksi otteluksi muodostui heinäkuussa 25.7. pelattu HRUFC-ottelu, josta heltisi tahtovoitto lopulta 33-24. Warriors oli alusta asti tappiolla aina noin 60. minuutille asti, mutta nousi lopussa ohi.

Stockholm 10's reissun jälkeen oli odotettu runkosarjan kohokohta, kun WRC kohtasi kahdesti Tampereen Rugby Union Clubin ensin kotona ja viikkoa myöhemmin vieraissa. Viime vuoden finaalijoukkueiden ensimmäinen taisto 9.8. alkoikin tasaisesti forwardien pelillä, mutta vahvemmalla backien pelillä ja Myllypuron laajaa kenttää hyväksikäyttäen Warriors tuhosi lopulta TRUCin puolustuksen 46-0. Viikkoa myöhemmin 15.8. oli revanssi Tampereella, joka päättyi myös yllättävän suurin lukemin 7-65 Warriorseille.

22.8. päätöskierroksella Warriors matkusti Turkuun Eaglesin vieraaksi, josta voitto tuli numeroin 53-0.

Semifinaali pelataan Myllypurossa 5.9.2009 pohjoislohkon kakkosta vastaan. Vastustaja selviää liiton tulossivuilta.

Warriors won the regular season southern division without losses and will now host the semifinal.

The tightest match of the regular season was local derby against Helsinki RUFC with a 33-24 win after trailing most of the match.

After Stockholm 10's there came the anticipated replay of last year's final against Tampere RUC. After tight start in the first match Warriors won by surprisingly big margin 46-0 at home. Following week was again a try festival for the backs, WRC winning away by 65-7.

On the last round Warriors travelled to play Turku Eagles and won by safe margin 53-0. Warriors allowed opponents to score only 38 points in all of the 6 matches.

The semifinal will be played in Myllypuro on 5th September 2009 against the second placed team in the northern group. The opponent will be shown on the federation results page.

Hi all,
I would like to say what a pleasure it was going to stockholm with you guys, it was an awesome trip with nothing to complain about.
So for the rest of the guys who are involved with Warriors, players or just social members here's a little summary of the weekend.

Warriors guys, played against 3 teams on saturday, Chics, Stockholm Exiles and Bergen Red Nuts, first up was chics who were a pretty talented team and were obviously an experienced tens team, and Warriors lost by a fair few points, the positive thing about the game was Chics were made to work hard for their victory. Next up were stockholm exiles who were looking like a pretty tight well drilled unit, the outcome was 52-0 to the exiles, so Warriors had one game left for the day and we made it count, by becoming the first Finnish team to win in the group stages of the competition, it was a close game but we pulled a late try out of the bag and won the game by 7 points.

On the sunday we played off against a team that had finished 2nd in their group, The Amlin Mob who i believe were from wales, this team were obviously a good team as finishing 2nd in the group is no easy task, Warriors had finally figured out how to play tens rugby and gave these boys a good run for their money, had Warriors last try been scored under the posts and not in the corner the game would probably have been tied but a dropkick from the sideline was unsuccessfull and we lost the game by a single conversion.

All in all it was an eventful competition and i believe the Warriors wish to return next year for another go, thanks to Taina for all her hard work and to all the other guys and girls who played, drunk and sung their hearts out, "old roy casey had a farm........ ."

Oslo Nordic Cup Champion / PM Osloon

Oslo Rugby Klubb won the Nordic Cup by beating Warriors 33-24 in a match of truly two halves. Oslo dominated strongly the first half, while Warriors woke up late during the break and scored all their points in the second half chase, which sadly ended a bit short. The day was the hottest one in Helsinki summer with 29 degrees.

Congratulations Oslo, thank you for travelling to Helsinki!

Oslo Rugby Klubb voitti Pohjoismaiden mestaruuden voittamalla Warriorsit 33-24 tiukassa kahden täysin erilaisen puoliajan ottelussa. WRC teki kaikki pisteet toisella puoliajalla jahdaten Oslon ylivertaiselta tuntunutta johtoa, mutta kiri jäi hieman vajaaksi. Päivä oli kesän kuumin 29 celsiuksella ja auringon paistaessa pilvettömältä taivaalta.

Perjantain ottelussa Tampere onnistui päihittämään Oslon kakkosmiehistön 15-10 vahvalla taklauspelillä.

Nordic Cup coming up / Seurajoukkueiden PM Helsingissä

Nordic Cup is a tournament that collects all the champions of Nordic Rugby nations together for competing over the rugby Nordic Club championship. This year it is Finland's turn to host the tournament, and Warriors Rugby Club is the proud host as the 2008 Finnish Champion.
The event will take place weekend after midsummer, 26th to 28th June in Myllypuro.

The teams are
Stockholm Exiles Rugby Football Club (Sweden)
Oslo Rugby Klubb (Norway)
Helsinki Warriors Rugby Club (Finland)
Tampere Rugby Club (Finland)

The Finnish runner-up 2008 Tampere was invited to replace Danish champions (Aarhus Rugby Club) who pulled out due to financial matters.

The detailed schedule will be announced soon.

For those of you who cannot wait, go and check Midnight Rugby Tournament in Myllypuro this weekend, there is already a BBQ at Aussiebar already on Thursday. WRC is naturally participating.

Seurajoukkueiden Pohjoismaiden Mestaruusturnaus Nordic Cup on tulossa Helsinkiin!
Suomenmestari 2008 Warriors järjestää turnauksen 26.-28.6. Myllypurossa. Perjantaina pelataan ensimmäinen kierros, josta voittajat etenevät sunnuntain finaaliin ja häviäjät pelaavat kolmannesta sijasta.

2009 SM-sarja ja Suomen Cup avattu

Warriors aloitti voitokkaasti mestaruuden puolustamisen

Warriors voitti Helsinki RUFC:n 48-7 kauden avauksessa Myllypurossa.
Lakkiaispäivänä yleisöä oli normaalia vähemmän paikalla, mutta samana
päivänä järjestetty Suomen Cupin avausturnaus toi muita joukkueita
paikalle.
Warriors teki ensimmäisen tryn ensimmäisestä hyökkäyksestään
kolmannella minuutilla, mutta sen jälkeen ensimmäinen puoliaika oli
kohtalaisen tasainen, kuitenkin numerot olivat tauolle mennessä jo
22-0.

Toisella puoliajalla aurinko poltti HRUFCin tappion suuremmaksi, ja
loppuun eroa venyi yli neljäkymmentä pistettä. Tumppi Finell hääri
tuttuun tyyliin suuren määrän pisteitä, Janne Hölttä teki kaksi maalia
päästyään ensimmäistä kertaa avauskokoonpanoon.

Warriorseille pisteitä tekivät Tumppi Finell (2 maalia/try + 5
lisäpotkua/conversion, 1 rangaistuspotku/penalty = 23), Lauri Ylönen (t = 5),
Lasse Simpanen (t = 5), Jaakko Vilén (t = 5), Janne Hölttä (2 t = 10).

2009 Suomen cup avattu

2009 Suomen Cup pelataan turnausmuotoisesti. Sarjan tarkoitus on
tarjota pelejä etupäässä kehittyville seuroille ja pelaajille, jotka
eivät ole mukana SM-sarjassa. Kuitenkin riittävän pelaajamäärän
takaamiseksi pelaajia täytyy lainata myös SM-sarjan miehistä.
Sarjassa ovat WRC:n lisäksi mukana Helsinki RUFC, Rauma Ice Pack
(RIP), ja Lahti Sisu. Turnausmuodossa pelataan lyhyemmällä peliajalla
ja pelaajamääristä riippuen myös pienemmillä kokoonpanoilla.
30.5. WRC järjesti kauden avausturnauksen, jossa kaikki pelasivat
vastakkain, yhteensä 6 ottelua aamupäivän SM-sarjan avauksen lisäksi.
Sisun nuori joukkue aloitti tasapelillä 5-5 RIPiä vastaan, mutta sen
jälkeen voitti tyylikkäästi kaikki loput pelit.

Hello to the Warriors faithful, its that time of year again, the rugby season got of to a flying start on saturday with both Warriors first XV and second XV in action in what can only be described as an awesome day of rugby for everyone who was involved.

The sun was blazing, and the crowd was pumped as Warriors Rugby Club lined up against Helsinki rugby club for the opening game of the 2009 finnish championship.

The first whistle of the first game blows and the Warriors are off, within 3 mins Captain T.Finell collects the ball from the full back position and steps confidently past three HRC players to score close to the posts for the first try of the season, comfortably kicking the conversion by means of dropkick to make the score 7-0, game on.
After the try came a battle for pitch position with some good kicking from both sides, with no-one really getting an advantage, after a few knock ons come the first scrums of the game, and WRC are bullying the HRC pack disrupting and turning the scrums very well.
When HRC had possesion the WRC defence were up in one solid line and making every tackle count, forcing mistakes from the boys in blue.
Then comes a moment of worry when HRC get a lineout within the WRC 22 meter line, HRC won the lineout but couldnt keep their composure to create any real threat and end up 20 meters back down the pitch, and their goes the best chance for HRC so far.
Warriors defence is working as one unit all the time and when HRC put together an attack the pressure is too much and WRC come away with a penalty, the ball is kicked into touch inside the HRC half and ref calls for a water break on the 20 min mark. After the water break the restart is a warriors lineout, it is confidently taken and the resulting move tears the HRC defence apart a nice loop from Lauri around the back of the centres and collects after the full back draws in the defenders and WRC have scored try number two, with a very well taken angled conversion by T. Finell to make score 14-0.
With WRC up by two tries and two kicks you can see a sense of confidence rush through the team and WRC start to pile on the pressure and camp out in the HRC 22. HRC gain possesion only to gift the Warriors a scrum close to the try line, WRC no 8 Lasse.S picks up at the back of the scrum goes blind and forces his way over for try number three, kick is missed and the score is now 19-0 with no reply. After the restart WRC made an error which was one of very few on the day and gift HRC with a scrum and maybe some possesion, fortunaltey this was not the case and a huge push from the WRC pack and they have won one against the head and come away with the ball, the resulting play ended up in touch for a HRC lineout, once again the throw in was not straight and Warriors take a scrum, and the resulting play ends up with a penalty to HRC, desperate for points they decide to kick for goal and the kick goes wide and HRC are still searching for points.
From the restart WRC get going immediatly and a high tackle from HRC gives Warriors a penalty, the tap is taken quickly and some clever chip kicks from T.Finell almost results in a try, instead HRC have a 22 dropout and once again survive another Warriors onslaught, ball is kicked back to the boys in black and gold who straight away start to pile on the pressure and HRC are looking a little bit lost and gift the Warriors with another penalty within kicking range, the Captain chooses to kick for goal and its good, the kick makes the score 22-0.
Shortly after HRC get a rare penalty and it is wasted when two WRC players make a huge 2 on 1 hit, resulting in a turnover, the game slows down and soon after the half time whistle blows. 22-0 half time.

After half time HRC came out with nothing to lose and so it showed, Seb off for HRC with a yellow card after punching one of the Warriors boys in clear view of the ref, 15 against 14, and somehow against the run of the game HRC got on the scoreboard after a tapped penalty and in the aftermath the WRC captain T.Finell and the HRC prop are both given yellow cards, HRC converted the kick and the score is 22-7.
Possesion was starting to change hands a lot in the blazing heat with nothing really materializing for either side although during this period the WRC boys start putting in some great hits in defence never really slowing down. The first break in play comes with HRC breaking towards the Warriors line but after a huge dump tackle 5 meters out by "BIG" Vallu the move is held up on the line, WRC scrum won easily and cleared to touch to ease the pressure, from the resulting lineout HRC get possesion and attempt to kick clear but a bit of skill followed by a liitle luck allows WRC hooker J.Vilen to charge down the kick and catch the ball from the bounce to break clear and score, with another successful conversion the score sits comfortbly at 29-7.
possesion is changing hands and stoppages for scrums slows the game down slightly but with another great break from WRC the ball goes out wide but gets knocked on, chance missed for the Warriors, shortly after WRC get a penalty for hands in the ruck and the ball is spun out wide debut 1st xv winger Janne to run it into the corner to claim another 5 points for the team in balck and gold, kick missed and the score is 34-7 and the writing is on the wall for HRC now. The game restarts and soon after comes some superb aggressive rucking from "The Beast" P.Dolan and centre V.Valtia comes away from the ruck with a turned over ball, after 3 phases and a nice hand off by T.Finell results in another try from the back of a very great piece of team play, conversion is made and the score is 41-7.
Once again possesion switches hands a lot and there is a lot of kicking and chasing, and eventually HRC a pinned back inside their own 22, with the pressure getting to HRC Seb finds himself with another yellow card, thats 2 bookable offences for him now and its a red card he's off, and once again the ball finds itself gliding through the Warriors backline into the hands of Janne who gets his second of the day and what a wonderful debut he's had, T.Finell converts and puts the score up to 48-7, what a great kicking performance from the captain also, with 3 mins to go Lauri gets yellow carded for a high tackle and sits the rest of the game out, ball is loose and T.Finell ends the game by kicking the ball out of the pitch. Full time 48-7

Afterwards WRC 2nd XV played in the finnish cup and were slow to start with a defeat at the hands of a very strong Lahti team but went on to win against Rauma Ice Pack and HRC 2nd XV, special mentions go out to Paulo De Tarso for scoring his first try in a warriors shirt, to Janne for his step up to the first team, to Andre Parisi for his call up to the first team and to "BIG" Jussi.K for his call up also.
Thanks to everyone who played and helped out, the day was a huge success for everyone, lets hope this is built upon as the season goes on.

Warriorsin uudet sivut julkaistu!

Uusi kausi on taas alkamassa, miesten joukkueelle ensimmäinen kausi jolloin tavoitteena on puolustaa mestaruutta, naisten joukkueelle ensimmäinen kausi kun haetaan mestaruutta yhteisjoukkueella HRUFCin naisten kanssa.

Tänä vuonna on jo ehtinyt tapahtua paljon: mestaruus Jyväskylän lumirugbyssa, Social 7's Hietsussa, maaottelut Bulgariassa ja Israelissa (joissa oli jälleen suuri edustus Warriorseista), harjoitusottelu HRUFCia vastaan, sekä harjoitus- ja pelikiertue Oulussa ja Vaasassa. Ja tämä on vasta lämmittelyä: SM-sarja sekä Suomen Cup alkavat Myllypurossa 30.5. WRC:n järjestäminä: WRC-HRUFC SM-sarjan avaus ja Suomen Cup (1. div) -turnaus. Viikko juhannuksen jälkeen 26.-28.6. WRC järjestää Nordic Cup -turnauksen Pohjoismaiden mestareille.

Kesällä on tiedossa taas paljon rugbya, tervetuloa katsomaan ja kannustamaan!

New website published!

Warriors new website is now officially published. The main language will be Finnish, but English translations will be added on important items. Season beginner will be on May 30 with WRC-HRUFC and Finnish Cup tournament in Myllypuro.
